Summary:
Whilst not a classic children’s novel series, Redwall is
definitely a parent favourite to read to and with older children. Set in a land
without humans, the mice of Redwall Abbey and their woodland friends defend
their home against Cluny the Scourge and his vermin army in the titular novel
Redwall. Eager to take up the mantle of the famous warrior-mouse Martin, young
apprentice Matthias takes up the search for Martin the Warrior’s lost sword and
shield in hope of defeating the army attacking the Abbey. With over twenty-two
books in the series, Jacques’ novels have been compared to many literary works
including J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the
Rings, Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in
the Willows and Erin Hunter's Warriors and Richard Adams’s Watership Down.
Sadly, Brian Jacques passed away just three months before
the release of his final novel in the series, the Rogue Crew.
